The role of the Manor
____________
Monarchy is the oldest form of government in England.
In a municipal monarchy, a baron or baroness is governor of a manor. The English territorial barony is known as barony per baroniam (or barony by right of provincial land management and jurisdiction over municipal government). This is prescribed by a delegation of the Royal prerogative to holders of baronial titles in exchange for loyalty to the Crown. Whilst the Baron is head of the Manor, some of the ability to make and enforce local laws now resides with the Crown and Sussex's three elected local councils.
Territorial barony differs from the Parliamentary barony, or the peerage; who are granted letters patent to sit in the House of Lords.
The Baron has a political, executive and judicial role and continues to play an important part in the life of the Manor.

As Lord of the Manor, the Baron undertakes constitutional and representational duties which have developed since at least 1091; if not before. In addition to these manorial duties, the Baron acts as a focus for local identity, unity and pride; gives a sense of stability and continuity; officially recognises successes and excellence; and supports the mission of voluntary service.
In all these roles, the Baron is supported by members of his family, the Baron's Council and his court.
